It has been quite awhile since Big Bear has seen the amount of snow it has seen this season. This is the second year we have taken the kids up to ski at Big Bear Mountain. We go up with two families rent a house literally across the street from the ski school and put three kids per private ski instructor, which turns out being about the same as a group class but they learn way more. If you are ever up there and need an excellent teacher for little kids Joe McCoy is the one to ask for. He taught my son and his friend's last year when they were just under three and they were doing their pizzas and starting to turn down the slopes. The girls this year had Cindy, she was an older lady, who was also wonderful and got my five year old definitely able to beat me down the slopes in a race.
Big Bear is such an easy weekend get away from San Diego and Los Angeles. It is also so much easier for kids to learn to ski when they are younger since their center of gravity is lower. I have to say this year both kids enjoyed it so much they wanted to stay a third day and ski again. But, then again, who wouldn't with the powder snow we got.
It was also my kids first time seeing it actually snow, so that was also fun for them. It was seriously the perfect weather. Sunny during the day and snowing at night making the mountain perfect for the next ski day.
Sadly, I have no restaurant recommendations for Big Bear. We did try a couple. This trip was definitely not about the food and more about the experiences and the memories we had with our friends. The kids were happy at Ben & Jerry's for dessert.
