As we approach our next adventure I reflect on our last adventure this past summer. Summer of 2017 we decided to take a road trip with our two year old, four year old, and my in laws through Slovenia and Croatia. We all squeeze into a European size "large" car and we were off. I was shocked at how well the kids did, even on the longer legs from Nice to Slovenia. There were no complaints and just thousands of questions about what they were looking at outside the window.
Our first stop was Postojna, Slovenia. It was beautiful reminded me of the Swiss Alps. We added this as a stop because I wanted to visit Predjama Caste, a Rennaissance castle built within a cave mouth. It was even more amazing in person than in the photographs. Walking through the castle and thinking that the building of this castle commenced in the 13th Century with none of the modern construction tools. The children loved the castle.
After visiting the castle we headed over to Postojna Cave tour. I had no idea what to expect. I knew there was a little train that takes you on a your of a cave. But, wow this place was majestic. It is a 24,340 m long karst cave system, the second-longest cave system in the country. A 5-kilometre subterranean trail is available for tourist visits. That said the train goes a lot faster than I expected. But after you get off the train you will do a walking tour through a portion of the cave.
Postojna cave offers the second longest tour of a cave in the world. The colors and forms will wow even those that are not easily wowed. The size of the cave is impressive. My children loved the cave and of course the train that was part of the tour.
If you are in the area do not miss out these two stunning places. You will not be disappointed. While we visited Postojna we also stayed at a wonderful hotel that I would recommend, Smrekarjeva Domacija. The property was fairly new when we stayed there. It was very clean and modern. The breakfast offered by the hotel was delicious. They had animals on the property that the children loved. There was also a trampoline, which was perfect for my kids to jump out a little energy while we prepared for our day at the sites.
